The Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD is proud to formally announce the development of a new apprenticeship programme for the sales sector in Ireland today at a stakeholder event in Rathdown House on the DIT Grangegorman Campus in Dublin.
The proposal for this innovative new generation “Associate Sales Professional Apprenticeship” was submitted after an intensive period of consultation by a consortia chaired by Ger Teahon, CEO of SalesSense International, a leading award winning international sales and service organisation and Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB), a leading provider of further education and training in Ireland.
The “Associate Sales Professional Apprenticeship” is a three-year level 6 programme focusing on core sales skills such as customer acquisition, customer service and marketing which are crucial in Ireland’s efforts to increase domestic and global market share for its goods and services. It will be a state of the art, world class programme integrating and combining academic modules with experiential on-the-job training where the apprentice will be working alongside, and learning from, experienced professionals in the workplace empowering the new sales professional to reach new levels of excellence.
The Initial Consortium Steering Group (ICSG), led by Ger Teahon, CEO of SalesSense with members; SIMI, Siemens, FIT, Netwatch, MSLETB and Sean Gallagher, confirmed that a substantial skills need exists in this sector and through a network of industry groups and supporters has established a high level of enthusiasm and willingness from the sector to get involved in supporting/partnering this apprenticeship.
There is a consensus in the sector that this development is timely given that; since 2015 almost all job announcements have sales and/or customer care roles mentioned as part of their overall recruitment requirement, the current economic outlook, projected growth in sales, and continuing uncertainty over Brexit.
This programme will leverage technology enhanced learning methodologies to deliver a cutting-edge industry led and driven programme supported by Mayo Sligo and Leitrim Education & Training Board and delivered through our many collaborating providers including other Education and Training Boards. The programme will be an exemplar that will form the centre of gravity for all sales training, shaping future of professional sales training programmes in Ireland.
Ger Teahon, SalesSense CEO said:
“I welcome the decision to formally ratify the ‘Associate Sales Professional Apprenticeships’ as one of the new generation apprenticeships to be developed as part of the Government Plan for the expansion of apprenticeships in Ireland.”

The potential for this apprenticeship programme to survive and thrive for the benefit of the sector is limited only by the level of sector engagement and take-up. To date support from the sector and our collaborating partners has been unequivocal. if this support is indicative of industry take for this unrivalled opportunity to meet the identified latent demand for talent, then success is assured. This apprenticeship for ‘Associate Sales Professionals’ will improve the speed, quality, professionalism and cost effectiveness of talent acquisition for the sector.
