Homeless campaigner Fr Peter McVerry, disability advocate Joanne O’Riordan and former Governor of Mountjoy Prison John Lonergan were among the speakers at a conference in Knock Shrine on Thursday 14th September 2017

The conference, which was hosted by the Society of St Vincent de Paul West Region, gave the students a chance to hear more about the work of the society, as well as using their voices and power to tackle social justice issues. The students found the conference a very enjoyable experience and will be very beneficial for students who decide to select the new Leaving Certificate subject Politics and Society. This is an optional Leaving Certificate subject in Davitt College, just like other exam subjects. It has been introduced on a phased basis, starting with a small number of schools in September 2016. Davitt College in Castlebar is one of these schools. Students will sit the first Leaving Certificate Politics and Society examination in June 2018.
